Semi-Bluff: Between a Bluff and a Bet in Value

When we hear of poker tactics, we immediately relate it to a bluff and a 'bet in value'. However, a bluff and a 'bet in value' are on opposite sides of poker tactics where the former desires other players to fold, while the latter wants other players to call. But did you know about a poker concept that falls between a bluff and a bet in value? Well, that poker concept is called a semi-bluff.

A bluff is often related to passing off a weak hand as if it were unbeatable to trick other players to fold so you can win the pot. While a bet in value, or value, is related to having the best hand and making a bet that you want other players to call so that they'll stay in the game to build the pot up. The semi-bluff, on the other hand, falls in between these two opposite tactics.

A semi-bluff is a bet or a raise in the stakes that you somewhat don't want to be called but it is fine for you if it does get called. The bottom line is that you have an okay hand that has the potential to improve so you want to play with fewer hands as possible. So, it is somewhat of an incorporation of both a bluff and a bet in value with a bit of a hopeful attitude added to the mix.

Let's say you have an ace of spades and a king of spades for hole cards. The flop reveals a jack of spades, a six of spades, and a queen of hearts. When you bet at this point, it's said to be a semi-bluff. You don't have a great hand after the flop but the draw can hopefully make a complete hand. If the draw produces any spade, you'll make a flush. And if the draw reveals a ten, regardless of the suit, you'll make a straight.

When you bet with a hand that doesn't justify a bluff or a bet in value but you intend to stay and see it through, it's called a semi-bluff. You really don't want to be called on that bet but you're okay if you get callers as well. It's a kind of play where you have a potentially good hand that will hopefully get better on the draw. And it's an optimistic play that makes the most of hand rank possibilities in poker.
