Playing Your Poker Cards Right
The new Poker player will be faced with a number of decisions, and will have to contend with a number of issues. But before you can study the more advanced topics, you need to know how to play the cards. After all, that's where it all starts.
Suppose you get handed a pair of Aces. In this situation, several online Poker players are happy to just raise, or even go all in. They have the big hand, so might as well just take the pot down. But this approach is well known; if you keep doing this, your opponents will just lay down their hands; you end up wasting your Aces on a tiny pot.
Instead, make a raise; not the minimum raise, because that will set off alarms too; but make it substantial. Or you can just limp in to hide the strength. With your pocket rockets you have the edge when you go to the flop.
What you do next will depend on the board. If you get another Ace, you can pretty much just check call all the way. If your Poker hand doesn't improve, you have to look at the board; if there is nothing there that exceeds your hand, just check and see what the other players do.
If there is an overcard, call, and see how the other players react to the flop. If they check or call, chances are the board didn't help them either. If they bet hard, they probably made a three of a kind. You have to decide if you want to play on or fold your Poker hands, although that can be difficult if you hold Aces or Kings.
If you are holding AK-AT a different kind of online Poker strategy is required. If you pair your Ace, bet hard. if you pair the other card, you can also bet or call. However, with AJ or AT, a lot of players like to bet or raise pre flop so that they can get some players out.
These hands, while far from being marginal, can be susceptible especially if a Q comes on the board, so getting some of the other speculative hands out may be a good Poker strategy. But if you fail to pair any of these hands, fold them. The turn will cost you twice, and even if you pair, you are probably behind.
As a new online Poker player, learning how to play when you get the high hands will be critical. You will not get them often, so make sure that you know exactly what to do with them, and you will make a tidy profit.
